The Story Behind the Piece

This rabbit figurine sat in my mother's nursery when she was a baby. It was lovingly and carefully preserved for me by my grandmother. Decades later, it sat in my daughter's room. When it fell off the shelf it sat on, I was devastated. It was one of the last additions to my "Beauty in the Broken" painting series, so by this point, I was used to the mix of emotions that comes with destroyed ceramics. As the sorrow faded, I started to wonder about the story behind this bunny couple. 

After all these years together, was the break as heartbreaking to them as it was to me? Were they always meant to fall apart? Should I let them? That was the biggest question in my mind. Are they happy to be put back together? or is it cruel for them to be remembered this way? Growing up in a broken home is hard but I couldn't help but think how strange it would be to remember my own parents together. The wrestle led me to the title "Broken Together/ Falling Apart" because my own interrepritatifon of the piece changes constantly. The piece acts as a mirror for the viewer's own experiences and current position on the spectrum of love and heartbreak.
